Sleep disorders affect most Americans nowadays. 74% of Americans get inadequate sleep. 2/3 of US adults are married to or live with someone who snores. 24 hours of sleep deprivation impairs performance as much as 0.08% blood alcohol level. However, 85-90% sleep disorders are undiagnosed. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most prevalent sleep-breathing disturbances, affecting 17% of men and 9% of women between 50 and 70 year old. Undiagnosed sleep apnea can be the underlying cause of workplace accidents, lost productivity, motor-vehicle accidents and many comorbid diseases including stroke, heart attack, diabetes, obesity and depression. Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are a group of more than 30 conditions affecting temporomandibular joint and surrounding muscles, ligaments, etc. TMDs affect between 5-12% of general population. It is reported more in women between 35-44 years old. Headaches and TMDs are concurrent conditions in many people. Approximately 50% of headache patients who visits a specialized headache clinic has TMD. 67-85% patients with TMDs also have headache, with migraine being most prevalent. Many TMDs last only a short time and go away on their own. However, in some cases they can become chronic and require professional evaluation and treatment.
